What is the best mentoring Lesson I have learned?

This article discusses one of the most important lessons learned from a conversation Dr. Cindy Gordon, CEO Helix Commerce International Inc, and CATA WIT Chair had with a C level group of female executives from two Fortune 500 companies. Here are the highlights from the conversation, but keeping the confidentiality of the executives and their roles.

Dr. Gordon" So what is the most important mentoring lesson you have learned in your career?

High Tech Executive from Global Printing Company

"Trust your intuition. Your mentor can always give you good advice, but at the end of the day you have to live with who you are, what you are confident you can acheive, and be true to your heart. Your intellect may say one thing - but follow your heart or you will be miserable."

Executive from Tier One Global Software Company

"I have to say that I learned that you need to have many mentors in life and different mentors at different stages in your life. For example, when I was 16, I needed to talk to other peers about what their career ambitions were, or school counselors, or my parents, or my parent's friends. What I did not appreciate when I was 16 is that you can idealize about a career that sounds sexy and then realize it is not too hot. So learning about the facts is really important. Things like income, growth potential, profitability, etc....  are very real and not as exciting to talk about at 16 as beer, parties, travelling, keeping fit, etc.. As I grew up when to university, you need mentors to help you find a job and you need new networks to find the right opportunity for you. Now that I am at the top of my game, I have realized I need less mentoring and my role is to give back and share everything I have learned along the way. Something like the circle of life... mentoring is a lifetime conversation."

Dr. Gordon" So if you could give one sentence each to a young professional thinking about joining the high tech or software industry - what would you say?"

1.) Soar Higher! Follow your Dreams and Follow your Heart.

2.) Each door creates a new door - and Collaboration will get you There!

Dr. Gordon" Thank-you for the insights - what I am learning is the more I learn I really know very little. So being humble in life is a gift to cultivate.
